A Journey of Transformation

Meet Megan

Cultural Practitioner • Storyteller • Founder of Give Voice

I am a cultural practitioner, storyteller and community voice advocate, dedicated to helping people discover the power of their voice.

For more than three decades I have explored what it means to find and trust our voice — through performing arts modalities, storytelling, women’s circles and community cultural work.

Today my work brings these threads together through
Give Voice, an evolving body of work and community movement that creates spaces where people can speak from lived experience, share their stories and contribute their wisdom to their communities.

Because when people are truly heard, communities flourish.

Finding My Voice,
Empowering Others

When I was 24 and holding my baby son, Timothy, I made a promise to him: that I would become the best Megan I could possibly be. That moment became a catalyst in my life and set me on a path of personal exploration and growth.

For much of my early life I had been someone who stood quietly in the background. But from that moment on I began seeking ways to grow into my voice and presence — wanting to feel confident taking up my place in conversations, in community and in the world.

Over the years this journey led me to explore many forms of expression including public speaking, autobiographical storytelling, comedy, clowning and spoken word. Each practice helped me move closer to feeling comfortable showing up as myself.

Alongside this creative exploration I have also spent many years studying spiritual and embodiment practices. My work has been influenced by training in energy healing and bodywork through Hawaiian and Polynesian traditions, as well as studies in metaphysics and other modalities that explore how we come to know ourselves more deeply.

These experiences continue to inform how I understand voice — not simply as communication, but as a process of uncovering what is often hidden within us.

Later in my journey I discovered the transformative power of women’s speaking circles through the WomanSpeak program. Being part of those circles helped me understand just how vital it is for women to have spaces where they are genuinely seen, heard and encouraged to speak from lived experience.

That insight stayed with me.

Today I continue to bring together the many threads of my life’s work — storytelling, circle practice, performance and personal development — as I develop Give Voice, an evolving methodology dedicated to supporting people to trust their voice and share their stories.

Community & Creativity

In early 2020 I returned to the UK just days before the world entered the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Soon after, I found myself living and working within The Othona Community on the Dorset coast — a retreat centre known for its spirit of openness, creativity and shared community life.

Othona offers visitors a sanctuary from the pressures of everyday life — a place where people come to rest, reflect, learn and reconnect with themselves and others. Living within that environment was deeply formative for me, and during my time there I hosted and facilitated retreats supporting people in their journeys of personal and spiritual growth.

This experience deepened my understanding of the importance of creating spaces where people feel safe to explore their voice and their personal stories.

Today this work continues through Give Voice Circles, where women gather in supportive environments to develop internal safety, trust their voice and share their lived experience.

Alongside this work I also serve as Communications Director and Events Producer for The Jawbone Collective CIC, a grassroots arts organisation based in West Dorset that champions poetry, spoken word, storytelling and creative performance.

Through Jawbone we create platforms where diverse and under-represented voices can be heard. Our initiatives range from intimate writing workshops to vibrant open mic nights and curated showcases — each designed to nurture authentic expression and strengthen community connection.

One of the projects closest to my heart is The Loom, a women’s storytelling evening where women gather to share personal stories in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Together, these initiatives form part of a growing creative ecosystem where people are encouraged to express themselves, share their lived experience and connect through creativity.

Building a Culture
Where Every Voice Matters

The work I do today is about more than helping individuals become confident speakers. It is about creating the conditions where voices can emerge and be heard within our communities.

Whether it is a woman discovering her courage to speak in a Give Voice Circle, a first-time performer stepping onto a stage at an open mic night, or a workshop participant realising that their story matters — these moments of breakthrough remind me how powerful well-held spaces can be.

This belief also led me to propose OmniVerse, a six-week series of performances and workshops hosted in the market town where I live — Bridport, Dorset — which later expanded to events and gatherings across Dorchester, Weymouth and Portland.

Through initiatives like these, I am committed to helping create communities that recognise the importance of diverse voices and welcome unique perspectives.

Because the strength of any community lies in the voices of its people.

"In August 2024, I approached Lu Orza (pictured with me) about starting a women's storytelling night in Bridport, and I feel so blessed that she jumped on board. With nineteen Loom events now under our belt, it’s been a wonderful achievement and a true privilege to work alongside such a talented storyteller and host."

A Little Back Story

Brisbane to Bridport:
A journey of continual change and growth spanning 16 years.

Brisbane, November 2009 - it was the week before my youngest son Luke graduated high school...

When I spotted a £120 one-way ticket to London, I knew it was more than just a bargain - it was destiny calling. With my sons Timothy and Luke grown and independent, I felt now was the time to chase my long held dream of living in the UK.

My original plan when leaving Australia was a 10-year journey with a specific goal: to return home with enough experience and insight to write a TV series called "The Making of Mandy." While that particular series never materialized, what emerged instead was something far more valuable - a life richly lived, filled with unexpected turns, profound connections, and personal growth that no script could have predicted.

Apart from living and working in the UK for extended periods over the last 15 years, I have also lived in Turkey, South Korea and Bali, each place leaving an indelible mark on my soul and creative spirit. Now residing in beautiful West Dorset for the past five years, I've found my home -however at the same time I so wish to have my Australian life and the Australian sunshine too.
